Mekelle
Mekelle is situated at the bottom of hills of Tigray. According to local historians Mekelle was established in the 13th century. Later, Emperor Yohannes IV had chosen it to be his capital in 1881 after he locates his power base from Debre Berhane.
Mekelle, the capital city of Tigray National Regional State, lies 780km north of Addis Ababa .It can be reached by plane and bus. However, its heyday came soon after Emperor Yohannes IV was crowned as king of kings of Ethiopia (1871-1889).
Yohannes built a number of churches including the churches of St.Teklehaymanot, Medhani Alem and Kidane Mihret during the 1870s and palace, which is now a museum, in the 1880s.
