Day 1: Addis Ababa – Mekelle – Hawzen
Begin your journey with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Mekelle. Upon arrival, drive through the scenic landscapes of northern Tigray to the town of Hawzen. In the afternoon, embark on an unforgettable climb to the iconic Abune Yemata Guh, a church carved into a cliff face, renowned for its 6th-century frescoes and dramatic views. Later, visit Giyorgis Maikado, another beautiful rock-hewn sanctuary with historical and religious significance. Spend the night in Hawzen.
Day 2: Gheralta Mountains and Churches Exploration
After breakfast, set out for a morning hike in the Gheralta Mountains to reach the twin churches of Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, situated on a high plateau with panoramic views. These churches, known for their architectural beauty and spiritual serenity, offer a rewarding experience for both hikers and pilgrims. In the afternoon, visit Mariam Papasit, a lesser-known but culturally rich rock church nestled within the Gheralta landscape. Return to Hawzen for overnight stay.
Day 3: Hawzen – Mekelle – Addis Ababa
Depart Hawzen and journey back to Mekelle. En route, explore two remarkable churches: Abune Abraham, known for its remote location and sacred atmosphere, and Abraha We Atsbeha, one of the oldest churches in Ethiopia, believed to date back to the 4th century.
These sites provide insight into Tigray’s ancient Christian heritage. Finally, transfer to Mekelle Airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa, concluding your memorable 3-day spiritual and cultural adventure.
