Ethiopia’s Best Highland Trekking Experience
Day 1: Gondar to Simien Mountains – Sankaber Camp
Your adventure begins with a morning departure from Gondar as you drive north towards Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic escarpments, deep valleys, and rare wildlife. After passing through Debark to register and pick up your park permits and scout, continue driving into the heart of the highlands. Upon arrival at Sankaber, you’ll enjoy your first light hike along the edge of the escarpment, with magnificent views of the Simien range. Keep an eye out for Gelada baboons, walia ibex, and a variety of endemic birds. Camp overnight at Sankaber or stay in a local lodge.
Day 2: Sankaber to Geech Camp (Full-Day Trekking)
After breakfast, begin your full-day trek from Sankaber to Geech Camp. The trail takes you along spectacular ridgelines and high-altitude meadows, passing viewpoints that open to breathtaking cliffs and valleys. One of the highlights of the day is the Jinbar Waterfall, a dramatic cascade plunging into a deep gorge. En route, you’ll encounter herds of Gelada monkeys, lammergeyers (bearded vultures), and possibly klipspringers or bushbucks. Arrive at Geech Camp in the late afternoon and relax in the crisp mountain air as the sun sets behind the peaks. Overnight at Geech campsite or nearby community lodge.
Day 3: Imet Gogo Viewpoint and Return to Gondar
Wake up early for a rewarding hike to Imet Gogo, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the Simien Mountains. At over 3,900 meters, this vantage point offers 360-degree views of jagged cliffs, deep canyons, and wide plateaus stretching across the northern Ethiopian highlands. After enjoying the stunning scenery and taking photos, return to Geech for a brief rest and begin your descent back to the trailhead. Drive back to Gondar in the late afternoon, where your 3-day Simien Mountains trekking adventure concludes.
