Day 1: Arrival – Axum City Tour
Upon arrival at Shire Airport, our representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you to Axum (60 km). After hotel check-in, embark on a historical tour of Axum – the cradle of ancient Ethiopian civilization. Visit the towering Obelisks of Axum (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the underground tombs of ancient kings, Ezana’s inscriptions, the tombs of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel, the legendary Queen of Sheba’s Palace, and the iconic St. Mary of Zion Church.

Day 2: Axum – Yeha – Debre Damo – Gheralta
Drive east towards Yeha (55 km), the spiritual heart of the pre-Aksumite Sabean civilization. Explore the Great Temple of Yeha, Ethiopia’s oldest standing structure. Continue to Debre Damo Monastery, dating back to the 6th century, accessible only by a vertical rope climb. This sacred flat-topped mountain offers breathtaking views and deep religious significance. Stop for lunch in Adigrat and enjoy the scenic drive through the Adwa Mountains and the highlands of Tigray. Arrive in Hawzen for the night.

Day 3: Gheralta Rock-Hewn Churches
Today, embark on a spiritual and cultural adventure through the Gheralta Mountains. Hike to the awe-inspiring Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor churches, carved into dramatic cliffs with stunning vistas. In the afternoon, visit the serene Mariam Papasit church, uniquely placed in the mountainous terrain.

Day 4: Abune Yemata – Georgis Maikado
After breakfast, take on the challenging yet rewarding ascent to Abune Yemata Guh, known as the “church in the sky.” Renowned for its vivid frescoes, ancient manuscripts, and panoramic views, it is one of the most remarkable rock churches in the world. In the afternoon, continue to explore the little-visited yet historically significant Georgis Maikado church, believed to date back to the 4th century.

Day 5: Gheralta – Abune Abraham – Mekelle – Fly to Addis Ababa
After breakfast, head south to visit the rock-hewn churches of Abune Abraham and Abraha We Atsbeha, masterpieces of Tigray’s sacred architecture. Continue your drive to Mekelle Airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa.
